Why Are We Here?
June 2008
Very often people wake up and say a morning prayer (which is good) and their prayer goes something like this: "Dear god, thank you for waking me up this morning, thank you for saving my soul, etc., etc., In Jesus' name, Amen.
I've heard that kind of prayer many times; I've even said it myself. But then I listened to it, and I got quite bothered by it.
"Dear Lord, Thank you for waking me up this morning." - THANK YOU FOR WAKING ME UP THIS MORNING???!! WHY???
I don't want to be here. I don't think anyone wants to be here. I want to be in heaven already, living in that mansion that Jesus prepared for me (Jn 14:2), living with the angels, living in the presence of God, all the time.
I don't want to be down here, on earth, in the devil's playground. Where temptation lurks around every corner. I don't want to be here. Why? Why God? WHY did you wake me up this morning?
That's the question to ask: Why am I here?? So I asked God, "God why am I here?" And God says to me, "I already told you. It's in that book I gave you!" So I looked I looked in the Bible, and here's what I found:
Jesus came here "to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10), and "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" (Luke 5:32). Now I know i'm not Jesus, but I knew I was on the right track. What did Jesus tell us we should do?
Matt 28:19, 20 - known as The Great Commission - Jesus says, "... go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them ... and teaching them everything I have commanded you." OK, so we're supposed to go talk about Jesus, turning sinners toward God. What happens then?
James 5:20 - "Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death." and Luke 15:6-10 - tells us that there is rejoicing in heaven, "rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents."
Finally, in 2 John1:4 and 3 John 1:4 - John tells us that he has great joy knowing his children are walking in truth, that is, walking with Jesus.
Now let's summarize what these verses mean:
- When we talk about Jesus, we are doing what he told us to do - fulfilling The Great Commission - so God's happy!
- When we turn a sinner toward God, they get saved - so they're happy!
- When a sinner repents - the angels are happy!
- When we know there's another new Christian out there - we're happy!
EVERYBODY WINS WITH JESUS !!!
So remember these two things:
- Talk about Jesus
- Everybody wins !!
